In 2009, the ASEAN University Network (AUN), the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), the University of Malaya, the East- West Center (EWC) under support of USAID, co-hosted the ASEAN Studies Curriculum Design Workshop to examine the state of ASEAN Studies programmes /courses in higher education in the ASEAN region and consider how existing programmes could be expanded and coordinated. The workshop was attended by experts in ASEAN Studies and related fields from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam. It came out with the consensus on the following regarding an undergraduate ASEAN Studies Course:

  • The curriculum should combine the study of ASEAN as a political institution and as a process through which the peoples and cultures of the region are brought into increasing interaction.
  • The curriculum should align with the broader needs of promoting public awareness of ASEAN throughout the region.
  • Undergraduate professors at the grassroots can best design the curriculum.
  • Member universities and states also have an important top-down role to play by providing clear related directives, particularly in endorsing the ASEAN studies initiative as a key higher education goal and in realizing the kind of funding and institutional support needed to ensure the sustainability of the initiative.
  • A core objective is to foster movement from a geographic understanding of Southeast Asia toward the development of a regionally focused geo-identity.
  • It is crucial to clearly identify what commitments and activities would be undertaken to promote the ASEAN Studies Course.
In order to develop a generic course consisting of multiple disciplines, this project consisted of two workshop events;
